Dance Therapy for Autism Spectrum Disorders

Autism Spectrum Disorders?

Autism and Aspergers Syndrome are both Pervasive Developmental Disorders that occur in 1 of 88 children in the United States. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders are each unique and range individually in their level of functioning and quality of symptoms. For most children on the Autism Spectrum impairment in social interaction, communication, and restricted behaviors and interest are common.

How And Why Does Dance Help?

By observing the childs movement preferences we are able to work with the child meeting them on a movement level. Additionally we can introduce new movement choices outside of the childs typical preferences to bring the child out of their typical awareness. By using movement as a form of communication the barrier of spoken word is overcome. The use of movement as a social interaction is also beneficial for children on the Autism Spectrum. With the use of various movement interventions, movement becomes the focus of the interaction helping the child to interact in a way that is socially appropriate.

The most important thing we keep in mind with any child we work with, is that each child is an individual and has his or her own set of needs.

Children are more than just a diagnosis and we understand that!

Our lessons are based on ensuring your child is growing and learning while having fun at the same time!
